What you get
The GitHub Student Developer Pack bundles developer tools for verified students. The headline AI-relevant benefit is Microsoft Azure: "Free access to 25+ Microsoft Azure cloud services plus $100 in Azure credit" for students aged 18 and over. GitHub's pack page does not say which Azure services the credit covers; Microsoft's own Azure for Students offer (also $100, 18+, no card) lists Azure OpenAI among the services students can access. Students aged 13–17 get free access to a set of Azure services (App Service, Functions, Notification Hubs, MySQL in-app, Application Insights, Azure DevOps) without the credit. The pack also bundles GitHub Copilot Student, which the pack page describes as "available to verified students" with "unlimited code completions and an allowance of GitHub AI Credits, plus limited chat and agent usage with models available through auto model selection only". GitHub does not publish a number for that AI-credit allowance, so we quote the wording rather than a figure.
How to claim it
- Apply to GitHub Education with proof of enrollment
- Once verified, redeem the Microsoft Azure offer for the $100 credit and free service access (18+)
- Activate Copilot Student from github.com/settings/education/benefits — GitHub says approval and Copilot activation are separate steps
Verification history and earlier terms
This dated editorial record includes superseded conditions. Use the current facts above for eligibility and access.
Published 2026-08-15 (ADR-0023), scoped down from the previous draft. The Azure half is quoted verbatim from education.github.com/pack ("$100 in Azure credit", "free access to 25+ Microsoft Azure cloud services") and the pack page also states "no credit card required" for the Azure benefit, which upgrades our cardRequired: false from structural inference to a verbatim source (relevant to V27). V24 RESOLVED 2026-09-13: the "New plan sign-ups are temporarily paused as we ensure a high-quality experience" banner that was on education.github.com/pack at the August sweep is gone, and the Copilot entry now reads "GitHub Copilot Student is available to verified students." The conflict described in ADR-0023 between GitHub's 2026-06-17 changelog (sign-ups reopening gradually) and the pack page has therefore resolved in favour of the changelog. We now state that Copilot Student is available, but still publish no credit figure for it: "an allowance of GitHub AI Credits" is not a quantity, so per the no-guessing rule the offer's creditAmount stays scoped to the verified $100 Azure credit. Sign-ups were originally paused on 2026-04-20. CROSS-REFERENCE 2026-09-19: the $100 Azure credit named here is the same Microsoft "Azure for Students" benefit now listed separately as azure-for-students, which can be claimed directly from Microsoft with an institution email and without GitHub verification. The two records are two claim routes to one credit, not $200 of value — keep that explicit in any student roundup (A5). Re-verified 2026-10-10 on education.github.com/pack. Azure entry unchanged: 'Access to Microsoft Azure cloud services and learning resources – no credit card required' / 'Free access to 25+ Microsoft Azure cloud services plus $100 in Azure credit. For students aged 18+.' The 13–17 entry: 'For students age 13-17. Free access to Azure App Services, Azure Functions, Notification Hubs, MySQL database from MySQL in-app, Application Insights, Azure DevOps.' Copilot entry unchanged: 'GitHub Copilot Student is available to verified students. The plan includes unlimited code completions and an allowance of GitHub AI Credits, plus limited chat and agent usage with models available through auto model selection only.' No pause banner. GitHub Docs (plans, usage-based billing for individuals) still publishes no number for the Student allowance: 'Copilot Free and Copilot Student both have an allowance of AI credits'. Only paid plans get figures (Pro 1,500 / Pro+ 7,000 / Max 20,000 total monthly AI credits). Activation per GitHub Docs: via github.com/settings/education/benefits, 'Approval and Copilot activation are separate steps', and 'GitHub reevaluates your eligibility every month.' Copy correction: the pack page does not say the Azure credit funds Azure OpenAI. That claim is now attributed to Microsoft's Azure for Students page, because neither GitHub nor Microsoft states verbatim that the pack credit IS Azure for Students.
