Hugging Face’s Inference Providers and OpenRouter solve the same problem — one API key, many models, no per-provider accounts — and are often mentioned in the same breath. Until October 2026 their free tiers were simply measured in different units. Now only one of them has a free tier at all.
At a glance
| OpenRouter | Hugging Face | |
|---|---|---|
| Free allowance | 50 requests/day, 20/min on :free models | None for free accounts since 7 Oct 2026 |
| Raised tier | 1,000 requests/day after buying $10 | PRO $9/month with $2.00 credits; $2.00/seat on Team |
| Card | OpenRouter: Free plan needs no payment method | Compute paid by credit card |
| Task coverage | Text generation | Chat, vision, embeddings, image, video, speech-to-text |
| Markup | — | None — “the same rates as the provider” |
What changed on 7 October 2026
Hugging Face used to give every free account $0.10 a month of Inference Providers credit — small, and marked “subject to change”. On 7 October 2026 its docs were changed so the pricing table reads “Free Users | None | - | yes (credits purchase required)”, and the page now says free users “can use Inference Providers by purchasing credits, or by upgrading to PRO”. PRO and Team/Enterprise still include $2.00 a month, which Hugging Face now describes as general-purpose compute credits. We record the change in the change log.
Where OpenRouter is clearly better
A free tier at all. OpenRouter gives you
20 requests a minute and 50 a day on its free model variants (IDs ending in
:free); once you have bought at least $10 of credits, the daily cap becomes
1,000. Within those counts the inference costs nothing, and OpenRouter says its
Free plan “works without a payment method”.
Model discovery. Because the :free catalogue rotates through current open
models, OpenRouter is the fastest way to answer “is this new model any good for my
prompt” without paying anyone. One caution: OpenRouter states that “Failed attempts
count toward that daily cap”, so retry with backoff.
Where Hugging Face is clearly better
Task breadth. OpenRouter is a text-generation router. Hugging Face’s partner table covers chat completion (text and vision), feature extraction (embeddings), text-to-image, text-to-video and speech-to-text across many inference providers. If your project needs an image or transcription model, OpenRouter has no answer and Hugging Face does — on a paid basis.
Paying at cost. Hugging Face says it “charges you the same rates as the provider, with no additional fees”. You can also plug in a provider key you already hold and be billed by that provider directly — in which case Hugging Face’s included credits do not apply.
Which should you pick?
- Running a hobby project for free → OpenRouter, with a direct provider free tier such as Groq or the Gemini free tier as your primary and OpenRouter as overflow.
- Trying many models quickly → OpenRouter.
- Anything that is not text (images, audio, video) → Hugging Face, paid.
- About to start paying → Hugging Face, for at-cost pass-through and one bill.
Current dated figures live on the OpenRouter and Hugging Face pages, and the full free-tier comparison puts OpenRouter next to the direct providers.
